Museum Quality Dance Intensives

Possessing The Dark: Mind, Body, Spirit: A 3 day-long workshop intensive on the darker side of bellydance from Tempest - the most recognized pioneer and style engineer of Gothic/Ritual/Dark Fusion Bellydance.  Tempest's influence has been felt far and wide with the creation and authoring of the Gothic Bellydance Resource in 2003, which has helped to define the movement across the world and inspired the release of several Gothic Bellydance performance DVDs (Gothic Bellydance: The Darker Side of Fusion (2006), Gothic Bellydance: Revelations (2007), Bellydance Underworld (2007)) as well as several instructional DVDs. In 2005 she began offering workshops on Gothic Bellydance, starting with the very first at Tribal Fest 5 and took it on the road in the United States in 2006 and 2009 with the Durga Tour - bringing foundation and inspiration to many dancers who today are now prominent dark artists in their own right. She has lead several hundred workshops and performed all over the world since those early days, and still works to push her own creative and personal limits, to foster growth in the dance community, and to inspire new waves of dancers. She co-founded and produced Gothla US from 2008-2010, and currently produces Waking Persephone: Dancing Through the Dark & Unusual and Tapestry: A Dance Retreat Experience. Her much-acclaimed Museum Quality: Art School for Bellydancers intensive has helped dancers find their own voices, expand their creativity, and elevate their artistry.

Possessing The Dark is designed to be the most comprehensive workshop exploration of Gothic/Ritual/Dark Fusion in existence. To truly and effectively perform this fusion form of bellydance, a dancer must go beyond just looking gothic, dancing creepily to weird music, and/or being dramatic/shocking. Over the course of the intensive, dancers will be challenged in a threefold approach to deepen their understanding of dark concepts, strengthen their technique, and refine their stagecraft:

~SPIRIT: The first day of the intensive is "Spirit" and covers the realm of ritual and working energy in a dance format. One of the most mesmerizing and captivating factors of dark bellydance is how the dancer not only works the energy in her/his body, but transfers and exchanges it with the audience. While this may seem like an abstract concept, there are very specific concrete techniques that make it possible, and they must be practiced to be done safely and effectively. We will explore ritual space and structure, evocation and invocation, elemental effects, historical and modern trance technique, and divination for inspirational pursuits.

~BODY: The second day of the intensive is "Body" and we will address exactly that - everything to do with physical movement in how it relates to presenting dance effectively and with power. We will begin with strengthening our foundation from head to toe, and then apply styling through the many diverse influences of the Gothic subculture through combinations and mini-choreographies while simultaneously exploring musicality. Students will learn signature movements and accents, hone their improvisational skills, and learn to create their own amazing choreography.

~MIND: The third and last day of the intensive is "Mind" and is about putting it all together. Once the Spirit is willing and the Body is strengthen, the Mind can then take charge. We will focus on stagecraft in multiple ways: theatrical presentation, prop usage, enhanced stage presence, narrative, and storytelling, costuming and make-up, etiquette and professionalism.
